Genesis 4:1-15,25, Ps. 50:1,8,16-17,20-21, Mark 8:11-13
“If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.” (Genesis 4:7)
God himself spoke to Cain as he speaks to us today, “sin is crouching at your door… but you must master it.” Why was Cain angry? He compared himself with Abel. Once you begin to compare and compete with others, you have said goodbye to your happiness.
Everyone has his or her own destiny. The fact that you failed in a venture where your neighbor succeeded, should not make you angry or jealous of your neighbor. Remember that no one has it all. Never wish to have anything that belongs to another because you do not know the troubles the person may be going through.
Are you angry? Know that you have power over your anger. Just as God advised Cain, we have all it takes to control and master our anger. Be a Master of your emotions. Do not be pushed into action by what you feel, think of the consequences.
Cain did not take God’s advice, he lured Abel into the field and killed him. Anger makes us take very bad decisions which we always regret. It was when God called Cain that he realized what he had just done. His action brought a curse upon himself.
Jesus was angry many times, yet He never sinned. Even in today’s Gospel, he was not happy that the people demanded a sign in other to believe. Guess what Jesus did? Nothing! The Bible says “And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he departed to the other side.” (Mark 8:13).
Let us imitate Jesus, when we are angry, please walk away! Never allow your anger to drag you into sin. You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone. Jesus did not work any sign for them but this didn’t remove the fact that He is God. Even if Jesus had worked a sign, they wouldn’t have believed. Sometimes, there is no need to blow your trumpet.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom in my moments of anger. Through Christ our Lord. Amen
